Summary/Abstract: The writer Henri Michaux (1899–1984) is the author of several travelogues. In Un Barbare en Asie, he recounts an eight-month journey through Asia, undertaken between 1931 and 1932, during which he travelled across India, part of the Himalayan Mountain range, South India, as well as the island of Ceylon, China, Japan, and Malaysia. Structured as a timeless wandering through geographical space, this travelogue offers a highly subjective representation of Asia. This article seeks to understand how Michaux’s travel writing attempts to express interculturality by compiling a broad inventory of the various images of the Other in Asia. More specifically, it aims to highlight the principle of contiguity that connects different peoples and cultures to one another.
