Summary/Abstract: Godspell came to the stage of the Hungarian National Theatre during a historical period that was searching for points of reference and anchors. Its performances and revivals were part of the repertoire of an institution searching for its role and place for more than a decade, and in addition to sold-out performances, they provided a permanent opportunity for young people starting their careers to introduce themselves. As a foreign musical, Godspell represented the popular line among the new productions: by adding it to its repertoire, the National Theatre, in line with the programming trends of the era, took a step toward establishing its image as a popular theatre. The study analyses the 1990 production according to the Philther method.
