Summary/Abstract: Garments, regardless of whether they are stored in closets or within museum institutions, are artifacts that can be interpreted and read in a variety of ways. Thanks to the data they contain, they represent a source of knowledge about the techniques and processes of production, the socio-economic position of the individual, national aspirations and aesthetic criteria that were valid at the time. The case study of the painted apron from Prizren, a unique specimen in the collection of Prizren bošče of the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade, is based on a newer methodological approach within the framework of clothing/ fashion studies based on museological work that includes the description of the object, its contextualization as well as the cultural biography that led to the discovery of the entire spectrum of bricolage contained in the museum object. Synthesizing the obtained material points to the conclusion that the painted Prizren apron bears the features of ceremonial city aprons of the third and fourth decade of the 20th century in terms of material, cut characteristics and function, while in terms of artistic composition (selection of a certain ornament and its positioning on the object) it differs from other Prizren aprons of that period and shows a certain analogy with the Janjevo one. Possible causes for the creation of a specific, hybrid form of the analysed city apron can be sought in the social ties between the Serbian and the immigrant Roman Catholic population of Janjevo in Prizren, which served as a platform for the exchange of cultural elements. On the basis of the data stored in the museum object, the possibility was created, in the case of the Prizren bošča, to create an image of the (un)representative clothing code of the Prizren women, i.e. the possibility of shedding light on those clothing elements that bore the features of uniqueness and non-standardization. Deviation from «patternism» and established art forms characteristic of Prizren aprons of the time had its share in the additional traditionalization of the clothing code of the female population of Serbian provenance in Prizren through the continuous wearing of the apron.
