The Fate of Christianity According to Friedrich Nietzsche

Summary/Abstract: The subject of the article is Nietzsche’s reflection on the relationship between Christianity and nihilism. Nietzsche’s reflections in this direction remained unfinished. Therefore, the study, based on Nietzsche’s sketch of the work The Will to Power, as well as on a number of older and newer interpretations, provides an analytical and systematic reconstruction of the argumentation that Nietzsche can offer in favour of his two theses on the relationship between Christianity and nihilism. The first thesis: nihilism in the European space is a consequence of the disappearance of Christian faith in God. The second thesis: Christianity with its moral interpretation of the world inevitably leads to nihilism. Nietzsche’s two theses lead to an understanding of what he calls the “fate of Christianity”. Christianity will face, in his view, inevitable extinction as a result of the mechanisms that it has developed itself. According to Nietzsche, nihilism can be overcome by giving up the demands of the Christian moral interpretation of the world. The study leads to doubt about the solution that Nietzsche presents in this intention.
