Summary/Abstract: The Polish public health service during the interwar period (1918–1939) faced numerous challenges, the most important of which included building an efficient medical staff, verifying physicians’ qualifications, organizing hospitals, clinics, and medical practices, and ensuring patient contact with medical professionals. These tasks could not be accomplished at the same level in large cities and the countryside. The level of infrastructure development in cities and rural areas, the wealth of residents, and the mentality of citizens regarding their approach to health care varied. Treating patients in the countryside was a complex and lengthy process of shaping appropriate attitudes and relationships between physicians and patients, as well as building mutual trust. The primary goal of this publication is to identify the challenges in implementing basic healthcare tasks in Poland between 1918 and 1939, taking into account the specific functioning of rural areas and small towns, as well as the legal framework in force at the time.
