Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating role of perceived benefit between parentification in different roles and differentiation of self. In the model, parentification is tested in two different models: parent-focused and sibling-focused parentification. The sample of the study consisted of 250 participants between the ages of 18-25, 137 women (54.8%) and 113 men (45.2%). Demographic Information Form, Parentification Inventory, and Differentiation of Self Scale were presented to the participants. Independent sample t-test, Pearson correlation analysis, and mediation analysis were used to analyze the data. According to the results, differentiation of self was found to be lower in women than in men. In the mediating effect analysis, gender was taken as a control variable, and the mediating role of perceived benefit from parentification was found between parentification and differentiation of self. When the individual's parentification experience increases for both roles, the perceived benefit from this experience decreases, and as the perceived benefit decreases, the individual's level of differentiation of self decreases. In this respect, it is seen that the difficulties related to the differentiation of the self of the person experiencing parentification may be related to the way they interpret their early experiences. Therefore, it is thought that providing alternative perspectives on childhood experiences in psychotherapy can contribute to the differentiation of the self.
