Summary/Abstract: Auschwitz-Birkenau camp has become a symbol of total genocide, the ultimateviolation of human dignity. This experience was also shared by the Roma and Sinti, who were placed in a camp called Zigeunerlager located within KL Auschwitz--Birkenau, created specifi cally for them at the beginning of 1943. The Roma placedin the Zigeunerlager died as a result of exhaustion from forced labour, poor sanitary conditions, rampant diseases, and died in gas chambers. An example of specialbestiality and criminal medicine were the medical experiments carried out on Romaprisoners by Dr. Josef Mengele. In total, about 20,000 Roma and Sinti lost their lives inthe camp. The liquidation of the Zigeunerlager in August 1944 marked the culmination of theNazi criminals’ plan to exterminate the Roma and Sinti in the name of racist ideology. The commemoration of 2 August as the Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust ofthe Roma and Sinti allows us to restore the memory of the Roma victims of Nazitotalitarianism.
