Summary/Abstract: The paper traces the chronological development of the concept of the subject Virtues and Religion. The proposal for introducing this subject as part of the educational system is presented. The idea aims to form moral values and spiritual sustainability in students by using a pluralistic and non-dogmatic approach. The possibility of choosing between confessional and non-confessional education is a key to guaranteeing freedom of belief and respect for differences. An educational program that incorporates universal virtues and cultural knowledge without violating the secular nature of education is supposed to be provided. The question remains whether an effective implementation that unites institutions, parents, and students around a common educational mission is possible.
