Summary/Abstract: The paper aims to investigate the Brexit-generated identity crises and their linguistic representation in a literary text, “Old Food” by E. Atkins by displaying the author’s linguistic choices and their possible ideological implications. The paper employs a qualitative approach analysing the text through the lens of critical stylistics. The theoretical background and the methodological tools follow Jeffries’ model (2010), providing a critical stylistic analysis and employing a selection of analytical tools taking into consideration the conducted theme and the textual evidence. Therefore, we selected four tools, namely: representing actions, naming and describing, exemplifying and enumerating and representing time, space and society. Jeffries argues that the authors’ linguistic choices are always ideologically loaded and may also be ideologically manipulative. The present research does not question the manipulative aspect of the language employed by Atkins, it uncovers particular ideologies hidden in the literary text, intentionally or not. The analysis reveals that the author efficiently employs the strategies of naming and describing, representing actions, representing time, space and society and enumerating and exemplifying to expose subjective considerations on the issue, respectively his pro-Brexit views.
