Summary/Abstract: The article examines the complex ecclesiastical and political circumstances surrounding the appointment of the Romanian monk Archimandrite Dometie Trikhnia as abbot of the Bulgarian Zograf Monastery on Mount Athos in 1965. Drawing on official correspondence between the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and the Greek authorities, it highlights the tensions arising from the perception that the Bulgarian character of the monastery was being undermined. The study follows Dometie’s activities, the responses of Patriarch Cyril and the Holy Synod, as well as the diplomatic efforts aimed at safeguarding the Bulgarian presence in the monastery. It also addresses Greek attempts to alter the ethnic composition of the Zograf brotherhood and makes comparisons with similar cases in other Slavic monasteries. The author argues that the monastery is both a religious and national Bulgarian shrine, stressing the need for a synodal decision concerning its future.
