Summary/Abstract: I see Rajkowski and his works as ‘fusion’ in the very true sense of the word. Listening to his music, you notice the fusion of different poles normally associated with each other as opposites; vocal- instrumental, acoustic- electronic, east-west, earth- cosmos, and past- future. As if his intellect is telling us those distinctions are merely manmade to be conventiently used in our minds in order to simplyfy human complexities, his music blends and fuses all the experiences that have ever meant anything to him. Arriving at the stage where everything melts down into ground-zero in order for something to emerge again (like the fire-bird Phoenix) is a process beyond style, influence or taste; it is a process of bringing inner experiences into a huge pool of gigantic fusion. This is undoubtely a courageous act since it demands without any guarantee of successful outcome a certain lenght of waiting period during which the melting process must be completed. It is also an act that indicates how patiently true Rajkowski is to himself. This is also true with his videos: his visual compositions engage material of both concrete-abstract as well as unprocessed- transformed. In’ Out of the Window’(1993), ‘A Walk’(1995) and ‘Getting in’(1995), he insistently explores combination of captured image and abstract composition in Vertov-like manner, as if he is reluctant to let go of his fondness for abstract paintings and its heritage. At the same time if you took short clips of his videos, you’d be surprised to see how well they would fit as MTV video shorts (the moving image you often see right after the commercials). ‘On the Way’ (1991), ‘(In)Finito) (2000), Separate Realities(2001) and ‘The Curtain’(2002) are just a few good exemples that demonstrate that above point. Unknown even to Rajkowski himself (I suspect), through extensive use of today’ technology for picture manipulation, his work enables him to capture something that is unique to our age. It is almost as if his works show to the alert eyes that not only is his inner fusion of different cathegories, but even our surroundings are indeed gigantic fusion at close range, where no distinct boundaries would be found.
