The Review of Russian Aesthetics and Literary Theory (The Scientific Undertaking of Yuri Borev)

Summary/Abstract: This text attempts to provide a concise review of the development of Russianaesthetics, especially its interdisciplinary connections with literary theory, but also withculturology, semiotics, ethnology, religion... In addition to highlighting the most importantnames starting with Belinsky, then Veselovsky, Potebnya, Shklovsky, Losev, Bakhtin,Lotman, special attention is drawn to the leading contemporary Russian aesthetician andliterary theorist Yuri Borev. In the period after World War II, he occupied a leading positionin the fight against the Stalinist ideologisation of aesthetics and art, and he crowned his long-standing scientific career with two major books including the two-volume Aesthetics: ATextbook, translated into over 30 foreign languages, and Encyclopedia of Aesthetics, LiteraryTheory and Art Theory., unique in contemporary aesthetics.
