Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the conceptual foundations and research objectives of the project IMAGINES NVMMORVM: Thesaurus Iconographicus Nummorum Graecorum (IMAGNUM), launched in 2025 within the framework of the German Academies Programme. IMAGNUM seeks to investigate ancient Greek coinage as a medium of visual and cultural communication and to create a digital thesaurus of coin iconography structured according to the principles of Linked Open Data. Integrating more than 110,000 coins from the Berlin Coin Cabinet and data from other international repositories, the project introduces a unified digital research environment for the systematic study of coin imagery, inscriptions, and their transformations. Employing methods of artificial intelligence, quantitative analysis, and interdisciplinary interpretation, IMAGNUM explores the dynamics of image transmission, adaptation, and reception across regions and epochs. Its five research modules address issues of spatial context, agency, materiality, text-image interaction, and the longue durée of visual motifs. Beyond creating a sustainable digital infrastructure, the project aims to redefine numismatic iconography as an essential field within visual and cultural studies, bridging the humanities and digital technologies.
