Summary/Abstract: The article presents and analyses a hoard of early medieval Islamic coins from the Tsaryne (Mayaki) hillfort on the middle Siverskyi Donets River, discovered in 2015. The terminus post quem of the hoard is determined by a dirham from the Maʿdin Bajjunays mint dated 195 AH / 810–811 AD. The assemblage includes late Sasanian drachms, Arab Sasanian issues, Umayyad coins and numerous Abbasid dirhams from Iraqi and Maghribi mints. The numismatic structure of the hoard is compared with other complexes from Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Prussia. The mint combination corresponds to the model of a Maghribi Caucasian silver flow in the early ninth century and contrasts with Prussian finds that lack Maghribi issues. The position of the hoard within the chain of Khazar fortified sites on the middle Donets supports the interpretation of Tsaryne as a key control point on steppeCaucasian and Volga-Oka-Desna-Seim silver routes. The Tsaryne hoard significantly refines the chronology and geography of the first large-scale influx of Islamic dirhams into the foreststeppe zone of Eastern Europe.
