Summary/Abstract: In this paper, we presented an unpublished Umayyad dirham struck in the Madīnat Samarqand mint in the year 130/747–748. This coin is the unique known testimony of the Samarkand mint activity during the Umayyad period. We propose a hypothesis regarding the mint’s opening and the reasons for these initial issues. Research Aim: This paper aims to inform the scientific community about the existence of this specimen struck in 130/747–748, and to analyze why the Samarkand mint may have been opened so early, sixty years before the earliest date known to date. Research Methodology: After the description of the specimen, the historical context is presented, followed by the analysis of the specific elements of the dirham, including the lack of the characteristics of the anti-Umayyad revolts’ coinage. Next, the circulation of Eastern Umayyad coins in al-Andalus is described, taking into account the monetary hoards in the territory. Finally, the conclusions are presented. Scientific Novelty: This specimen shows the existence of issues from the Samarkand mint during the Umayyad period, making a significant contribution to understanding the history and issues of the period. Conclusions: This dirham is the unique evidence preserved of the Umayyad mint of Samarkand, which was probably opened to pay Umayyad troops defending Transoxania territories during the Abū Muslim revolt.
