Summary/Abstract: The notation of the fifteenth-century carol repertoire provokes interest in a variety of ways, including problems related to the infringement of the fundamental rules of mensural notation concerning alteration. The current article explores different instances in the carols where the rules are disregarded, in order to draw conclusions about the gradual obsolescence of the principle of alteration during the fifteenth century. It also draws attention to the way scribes added numbers in the carol manuscripts under notes that need to be altered, in this way facilitating the understanding of the notation.
