Summary/Abstract: Digitalization has changed what a dictionary can be: from a bounded book to a modular, linkable, and evolving resource that serves scholarship, technology, and society. For Romanian lexicography this is not an optional direction but a structural necessity – a sine qua non for sustaining the language’s descriptive tradition in the digital age. This research demonstrates that the relationship between lexicography and digitization is bidirectional: not only does technology shape lexicographical practices, but the needs of lexicography also influence the development of digital linguistic infrastructures. The digital dictionary is becoming not just a reference tool, but an infrastructure component that is indispensable for research, education, linguistic applications, and the preservation of cultural heritage. We need a Romanian cultural strategy to create a national (digital) portal for the Romanian language, where digital resources and tools, regardless of who developed them, are brought together in a joint effort by philologists and computer scientists – specialists or volunteers – with the desire to make them available to those interested. Achieving this requires technical standards, institutional support, editorial consensus, sustainable funding, and a collaborative research culture.
