The Textology and Language of New Testament Quotations in the Church Slavonic Translation of Piotr Skarga’s Sermons of the Second Half of the 17th Century

Summary/Abstract: The article examines the Church Slavonic translation of Peter Skarga’s sermons, made by the bookmen of the Moscow Chudov monastery, in the manuscript from the State Historical Museum, Sin. 1202 of the second half of the 17th century and reconstructs the stages of work on it. Skarga’s sermons were compiled for the Brotherhood of Mercy (Bractwo miłosierdzia) in Krakow and were repeatedly published. The focus of the work is the quoting of New Testament fragments, which forms the first part of each sermon by Skarga. Some of the sermons were included in the manuscript in two versions, which reflect different stages of work on the text. The original translation was probably made by Epiphanius Slavinetsky before his death in 1675. In the field of the New Testament text, it is characterized by the preservation of Skarga’s readings in cases where his version differs from the readings of the Polish Bibles. In general, Epiphanius’ translation is mainly oriented to the Moscow Bible of 1663, the work on the preparation of the publication of which he led. The second version of the translation is a cardinal revision of the previous one. It was performed by Epiphanius’ disciple Euthymius Chudovsky. He revised the New Testament text using a translation of the New Testament prepared by the bookmen under the guidance of Epiphanius. The use of this translation is indicated by the remark “write it off from the Greek-Slavic Gospel”. A comparison of the revised New Testament readings of Sin. 1202 with the readings of two diglottes from the State Historical Museum, Sin. gr. 473 and 472 shows that Euthymius used for this work the New Testament’s version that he had already revised, which appeared after the death of his teacher. It is therefore likely that the version of Skarga’s sermons revised by Euthymius could have appeared in the 1680s. In the corrections, the editor seeks to avoid a literal reflection of the features of the Polish text of the New Testament quotations. At the same time, Euthymius’s readings turn out to be much more literal than Epiphanius’ original translation. The ultimate goal of the revision was to eliminate traces of the different confessional origin of the text and adapt it to Church Slavonic translations from the Greek language of the Chudovsky book circle.
