Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to examine the role of marriage in the progression towards adulthood. This transformative process involves a shift from individualism to a commitment to a shared partnership. The theoretical framework underpinning this topic is explored and juxtaposed with empirical research findings on the markers of adulthood as perceived by individuals aged 18 to 30. The Polish version of the Questionnaire of Criteria of Adulthood (Kwestionariusz Kryteriów Dorosłości = KKD) was utilized for this investigation. The study revealed that key milestones of adulthood include taking accountability for one’s actions, managing emotions, avoiding risky behaviours, gaining independence from parents, and the ability to provide for a family. While mar- riage has traditionally been a significant indicator of adulthood, partnerships are now emerging as an alternative. Furthermore, the research highlights that transitioning into adulthood and deciding to enter into a lasting relationship, such as marriage, involves two critical processes. The first im- plicates self-reflection and resolving identity issues, while the second entails forming meaningful connections with others. Support from significant adults is crucial in guiding the younger gener- ation through a conscious transition from self-focus to a focus on others. By obtaining personal consent for relationships and establishing a sense of identity through enduring bonds, individuals can progress towards maturity.
