Summary/Abstract: 1 Samuel 4 details two battles at Eben-Haezer, both of which resulted in defeat for the Israelites. The Ark of God, seized as a war trophy, was taken by the Philistines and placed in the temple of Dagon in Ashdod. These events did not indicate YHWH’s powerlessness; rather, they were a manifestation of His sovereign will. Through these occurrences, YHWH aimed to admo- nish the Israelites, demonstrate His supremacy over Dagon, and test the Philistines. This article examines 1 Samuel 5:1–5, a passage intended to remind the Israelites of their God’s power and en- courage faithfulness to YHWH, while also providing solace during challenging times. Employing the historical-critical method, the author analyses the structure of the pericope and the multi-stageprocess of Dagon’s humiliation. This research addresses whether the desecration of the Philistine idol was accidental and explores the gradation of the effects resulting from the confrontation be- tween YHWH and Dagon.
