The Importance of the Rule of Saint Benedict of Nursia in the Process of the Monastic Reform in the Carolingian Period

Summary/Abstract: The Carolingian culture constitutes an interesting period in early medieval Europe. This period is important from the historical, political, religious and social point of view. The object of the study is the Polish translation of Źródła prawne do dziejów reformy monastycznej w czasach karolińskich [Legal resources for the history of the monastic reform in the Carolingian period, translation SM]. The publication is comprised of the translations of the kings’ and emperors’ capi- tularies and statuta synodalia and other synodal texts, monastic normative texts, supplements to the Rule, letters coming from the Reign of Charles the Great (768–814) and Luis the Pious (814–840). * Ksiądz Michał Kieling — prof. In the first part of the article the genesis of the monastic reform in the Carolingian period is presented. Next, the role of the Rule of Saint Benedict of Nursia as an example and a source of the creation of monastic activity is discussed. Finally, the influence of Benedict of Aniane on the reform of vita monastica in the Carolingian period is presented.
