Summary/Abstract: The article, based on the analysis of historiographical and documentary sources, investigates one of the leading directions of development of socio-cultural processes in the south of Ukraine in the late XIX  early XX centuries. Cultural and educational activities of the intelligentsia were manifested in the form of public readings, popular lectures and literary and musical evenings. Charitable societies and public organizations took care of the readings, and zemstvos provided great support in organizing the readings. In Odesa public readings were started by the Odesa Slavic Charitable Society named after Saints Cyril and Methodius in 1882. The Odesa Bourgeois Society, the Greek Charitable Society, the Music Society, the Odesa Actors’ Circle, the Odesa School of Drawing, as well as educators from other regions were involved in the cultural and educational events. Three public auditoriums were opened in Odesa and the suburbs. The most popular was the auditorium on Staroportofrankivska Street, where a Lecture Committee and a book depository for the distribution of popular literature were established. In addition to readings, there were public literary and musical evenings and public lectures, opened reading rooms (libraries). Teachers and lecturers of secondary and higher education institutions were involved in conducting public readings and public lectures. Teachers of Novorossiysk University actively cooperated in this field. Dramatic artists were involved in literary, musical and dramatic evenings. Members of the Odesa community were regular participants in the readings. Lectures on literature, history, geography of the region, musical evenings and performances have greatly contributed to raising the educational level of the population.
