The Chief Justice in Šamorín 1525‒1526

Summary/Abstract: At the end of 1525, King Louis II, at the request of the nobles of the Bratislava County, sent the chief justice Nicholas of Turiec (Turóci) to the royal town of Šamorín, where, together with the vicecomes , iudices nobilium and for this purpose elected jurors, he created a judicial tribunal, where he primarily dealt with criminal acts and property law matters. In accordance with court practice, the documents were issued in the name of the king and confirmed with his judicial seal, however, some customs of the county were respected, especially regarding summons to court. The trial was divided into two phases, with the judicial council meeting at least between 11 and 22 December 1525 and between 29 December and 12 January. In the earlier stages of the sessions mainly summons were issued, court orders even after the dissolution of the tribunal. Between the two phases during the Christmas break, Turóci visited the city of Bratislava. Unlike the courts at the royal court, the Šamorín tribunal had a regional character, meaning that the sources are limited to only a few archive collections, and because of this, reconstructing its course and court proceedings in their entirety was not possible. Not only nobles appeared in court, but also representatives of church institutions and individuals, even Bratislava burghers and, in two cases, members of the tribunal. The majority of disputes had already been tried at the royal court and even in Šamorín did not reach a permanent resolution. Out-of-court settlements, usually mediated by the court, were not very successful either. This fact does not indicate the inefÏciency or low prestige of the Šamorín court, but rather the clumsiness of the Hungarian judiciary in the years before the Mohács disaster.
