Summary/Abstract: This study analyses the influence of Wolfgang Musculus’s Commentary on Matthew (1544) on Homily 11 (for the Second Sunday after Pentecost) in The Meaning of the Gospels (1567), also known as Coresi’s First Postil. Building upon earlier research which demonstrated that other homilies in the Romanian postil drew from Musculus’s work, this article offers a detailed comparison between Matthew 4:18–22 in Musculus’s Latin commentary and its adaptation in the 11th homily of Coresi’s Postil. The structure of the Romanian sermon closely follows Musculus’s five analytical questions, omitting only one. Rather than copying passages verbatim, the Romanian author integrates theological ideas and arguments into a new rhetorical and doctrinal framework adapted to his Romanian context. The article highlights the homily’s sharp anti-clerical tone, its reinterpretation of Musculus’s metaphors (notably the “fishers of men” allegory), and its strong emphasis on Scriptural literacy and pastoral competence. By examining parallel biblical references and rhetorical strategies, the study shows that the Romanian preacher was not a mere translator, but a theologian capable of adapting Protestant exegesis to the cultural and ecclesiastical needs of the Romanian Reformation.
