Summary/Abstract: Although I’ve known only a few bibliophiles—and none of them very well—I suspect that some of them must have a particular obsession, a fixation, a common thread that structures their collecting mania and forms the solid core of their library of rarities. You can’t have everything, can you? And so, since it’s impossible for a person, no matter how wealthy or passionate, to own all the rare books in the world, all the prestigious first editions, all the surviving incunabula, focusing on a specific theme—their personal bibliophilic signature—is a natural decision. It sets at least one tangible goal, a path whose end can be seen, tempering to some degree the insatiable passion for the Whole.
