Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the role of Joakim Krchovski (1750–1820) in the genesis of the Macedonian literary expression and his place within the broader continuum that leads to the codification of the Macedonian standard language in 1945. As one of the first Macedonian enlighteners, Krchovski, with his five books printed in Budim, not only continued the religious-didactic tradition but also transcended it by introducing elements of the vernacular language and a cultural-educational mission. Through an analysis of the thematic and generic structure of his works, the study highlights his literary strategy: a gradual emancipation from the dominant Church Slavonic model and a clear orientation toward the comprehensible language of the common people. This choice is interpreted as an early form of linguistic normalization, legitimizing the vernacular idiom as an appropriate medium for the spiritual and cultural life of the community. By means of comparative analysis, the paper establishes connections between Krchovski and later Macedonian revivalist authors, emphasizing his influence on the development of national cultural awareness and his role as a fundamental link in the historical continuum of Macedonian culture. In this context, the codification of the Macedonian language in 1945 is understood as the culmination of a long process that began with Krchovski’s earliest literary efforts. Krchovski should not be regarded merely as a religious writer, but also as an educator and cultural reformer whose work represents a crucial starting point in the path from vernacular speech to the Macedonian modern literary language. Within the framework of the 80th anniversary of codification, his legacy gains renewed scholarly and cultural relevance, as well as contemporary significance as a cornerstone of Macedonian linguistic and literary tradition.
