Summary/Abstract: The Roma slavery’s memory in the contemporary collective consciousness of Roma and non-Roma in Romania lies between social amnesia and the reconstruction of remembrance through Roma activism, research and arts. In this article, I draw my theoretical base on the concept of social amnesia, defined as the repression of memory by society – the rejection of one’s own unfavorable past in order to preserve the positive image of the majority and of the state, in order to examine elements of Roma slavery’s memory and of the epistemic injustice in relation to Roma in contemporary Romania. The article also presents how the memory of slavery is reconstructed through Roma activism, research and arts.
