Summary/Abstract: The study examines the complex issue of Bukovinaʼs annexation by Austria in 1775, exploring its internal and international implications. The author analyses the historiographical terminology surrounding this event, highlighting the cultural and societal consequences of incorporating the northwestern part of the Principality of Moldavia into the Austrian Empire. The annexation of Bukovina was a multifaceted act involving both military force and diplomacy. Austria took advantage of the Ottoman Empireʼs weakness and the context of the Russo-Turkish War (1768–1774) to gain control over a strategically important region. The term “annexation” is considered the most suitable to describe this event, as it reflects the unilateral nature of Austria's action and its consequences. The event had a significant cultural and demographic impact on the region. The Habsburg administration implemented a colonization policy, attracting settlers from various areas of the vast empire and beyond. Bukovina became a multiethnic and multi-confessional province of the Austrian Empire, characterized by increased ethnic and religious diversity. The cultural implications of the annexation profoundly transformed the region into an ethno-linguistic mosaic. The German language, Central European architecture, and Austrian institutions shaped Bukovinaʼs multi-ethnic identity.
