Summary/Abstract: This article explores an event that is little-known in Slovenian historiography – the incident near Pieris on June 30, 1946, when the Giro d’Italia peloton was forcibly stopped. The episode is set within the broader context of the so-called Trieste question, which, amid growing political and ideological divisions, created tensions between the Western Allies on one side and Yugoslavia on the other. Considering how Italian political authorities at the time approached the Giro, the arrival of the 12th stage in Trieste can be understood as an act of political symbolism, reflecting the wider strains between the Western Allies and Yugoslavia. The halting of the race was therefore more than just a sporting incident – it was a manifestation of local and international political pressures and a reminder of the conflicts that, in various ways, shaped the postwar period.
