Summary/Abstract: This article aims to analyze silence in linguistic interactions in the public sphere. Using a methodology that combines an interactionist approach with an externalist interpretation of speech act theory, it has been shown that, from the perspective of Austin's theory of interaction, even if nothing is said in a given segment of speech, it gains the status of a speech act due to the normative illocutionary effects caused per conventionem within socially accepted rhetorical procedures. As demonstrated by the analyzed examples of silence in linguistic interactions, this approach is based on the illocutionary effects of silence rather than on the speaker's intention or other factors that may influence this interpretation.
