Summary/Abstract: In this interdisciplinary article, the author discusses the issue of stress experienced by speakers due to public speaking, proposes examining the health benefits of rhetorical education in light of Aaron Antonovsky’s theory of salutogenesis and recommends the use of the salutogenic model in the methodology of teaching rhetorics. The author claims that properly designed rhetorical training contributes to the development of strong sense of coherence in rhetoric students. The three components of this construct – sense of comprehensibility, sense of manageability and sense of meaningfulness – work together to help individuals maintain health in confrontation with stressors; all of them can be developed through rhetorical education. Based on Antonovsky’s theory, the author defines three psychological goals in the teaching of rhetoric; a deliberate effort by students of this art to pursue these goals should enhance their psychological resilience.
