THE ROLE OF RELIGIOUS CIVIL ORGANIZATIONS IN SUPPORTING AGING COMMUNITIES IN MICRO-REGIONS

Summary/Abstract: According to demographic data and projections, Europe's population is experiencing a significant shift in its age structure, which is also evident in Romania. It is crucial to consider this trend when devising age-related policy measures. The concept of the silver economy is closely associated with the positive change in attitudes towards aging. It represents an economic paradigm that focuses on the active participation and economic activity of the elderly, as well as the unique needs and challenges of the aging population. The silver economy approach aims to encourage cooperation between age groups and promote the participation of the elderly in the labor market, as well as to ensure a sustainable and satisfactory quality of life for an aging society. This study seeks to explore the question of what type of public policy role civil society organizations assume concerning dimensions of the silver economy, such as employment, social care, and enhancing quality of life. We analyze the relationship between the indicators of the active aging index and the concept of silver economy. Our study employs a mixed- methods approach. Presently, we are developing a case study that explores the characteristics of Érmellék, a disadvantaged Romanian micro-region comprising 14 predominantly rural administrative units. To create this case study, we have conducted semi-structured interviews with ten key stakeholders in the region, including mayors, clerks, and social service specialists. Additionally, we have utilized secondary statistical analyses to present regional characteristics and the desk research method to investigate public policy elements. As a best practice, we focus attention on Caritas Catolica, the primary social service provider in the region. The importance of this study lies in the fact that it provides relevant and useful information about the situation and role of the elderly population in the economic and social life of the micro-region, as well as points out the opportunities for development inherent in the silver economy. The results of this study can inspire practical solutions and public policy measures through the involvement of civil organizations.
