Summary/Abstract: In 2010, a small festival dedicated to Balkan cuisine and cinema set aside competitive elements and awards to promote a unifying view of the cinema of ten Balkan nations – the so-called Balkan Film Studies. This is due to the merits of the great Romanian poet-chef Mircea Dinescu; to the picturesque village on the Danube bank of Portica de Fier, where the borders of Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia meet; to several researchers; and to the high artistic value of Balkan films created in recent decades, which have established the concept of “Balkan cinema”. Paradoxically, while ethnic conflicts brought severe trials to the people of the Balkans and redrawn borders, filmmakers managed to turn this true drama into a source of inspiration and to learn to better develop relationships with their neighbors through the language of cinema.
