Summary/Abstract: Emil Rashev was a great Bulgarian portrait photographer and cinematographer who worked between the 1930s and 1970s. Rashev became interested in photography in his father Hristo Rashev’s portrait studio in the town of Razgrad. In the early 1930s, the whole family moved to live in the capital, Sofia, where Emil received a master’s degree and opened his own studio under the brand name “Photo Art – Rashev”. The young photographer quickly established himself as one of the best portraitists in the capital, and almost the entire elite of the country passed in front of his lens. After the coup of September 9, 1944, Emil Rashev worked at the Bulgarian Deed Foundation, initially as a newsreel cameraman, and later turned to feature films Director of Photography. His fame as a good portraitist led to him being “commissioned” to photograph the communist leader Georgi Dimitrov. Rashev’s career in feature films developed very successfully until the moment when his son from his first marriage decided to marry beyond the Iron Curtain.
