Summary/Abstract: The research focuses on an important issue in the screen arts – the development of the comedy genre, examined through examples from contemporary South Korean cinema. The focus is on groundbreaking, highly successful feature films and globally recognized series produced in the 21st century. The underlying theme is the artistic interpretation of a painful historical issue for the nation – the division of the Korean peninsula. The titles under analysis are representative of the functioning of the specific heteroglossicity of the ridiculous in the specificity of East Asian film culture. In the course of the exposition, both the infiltration of cinematic comedy from the West into early Korean distribution and the adaptation of the genre into indigenous productions are examined.
