Summary/Abstract: Miraculous icons are signs of miracles: a reminder of miracles that have happened and at the same time, a sign that miracles will continue to happen. The miraculous icon can only be related to and through the miracle and its particular nature, inhabiting the boundary between the world of the real and the world of the supernatural. The miraculous icon is always an icon-in-action; its fame has to do with doing something on the border of the difficult to explain and the supernatural: action-beyondnature. The miracle happens in the action; it is the event-life of the icon. But what seems to be still missing is that semiotic perspective on the miraculous images that focuses the diversity of their possible worlds: what are the functions of the voice associated with miraculous images–a voice coming both from the icon itself and before (beyond) the image, for which voice the image itself is later painted, or what is the dynamic of the relationship between voice and image in miraculous icons. These are interweaves of a very exciting palimpsest that spreads over the territory of love and reverence for the miraculous icons of the Theotokos not only multiple maps of different miracles but also multiple optics of reading and understanding–of both the miracles and the icons. In the following pages, I will try to present the miraculous icons of the Theotokos on Mount Athos in the light of such a semiotic perspective.
