Summary/Abstract: The following article intends to demonstrate how determinism is an integral part of I.L. Caragiale's thoughts and prose. Drawing on testimonies, critical exegesis, and philosophical contextualisation, the study aims to prove that I.L. Caragialețs thinking was profoundly shaped by beliefs in causality, chance, as well as the illusion of free will. Through close readings of selected prose, the article identifies a coherent fictional universe governed by deterministic forces, in which entropy governs over all, residing in the interaction between chance and necessity. This analysis cares to show that I.L. Caragiale's characters, whether conscious or unaware of the mechanisms that constrain them, are ultimately subjected to social and biological forms of determinism. By focusing on the pessimistic dimension of I.L. Caragiale's prose, this study aims to reposition the writer's works into philosophical inquiries into human limitation. As such, I.L. Caragiale's work lays the foundation for proving the illusory nature of freedom and the impossibility of escape from a universe ruled by causality and hazard.
