Summary/Abstract: This paper explores how Ana Novac transforms her experience in the Auschwitz camp into a hybrid text that stands between a personal diary and a literary work. Her original notes followed typical diary conventions, capturing immediate reactions and documenting events as they were lived. However, when rewriting these notes in exile, Novac introduces narrative structure, stylistic choices, and subtle fictional elements that reflect the distance created by time and displacement. The study shows how exile becomes a space that allows traumatic memories to be reshaped and expressed in new ways. By combining documentary testimony with literary techniques, Novac’s text challenges strict definitions of Holocaust diaries and offers insight into how survivors adapt their stories so they can be shared, understood, and preserved in cultural memory.
