Summary/Abstract: The research is dedicated to the study of wedding songs of the Eastern Udmurts. Particular attention is paid to the poetic images and musical features, which form an integral part of the wedding ceremony and represent a unique symbolic language. The analysis was conducted on the basis of songs sung by the groom’s guests. A thorough analysis of the texts revealed the use of metaphorical symbols, which are most often based on natural images: animals and plants. The study of musical accompaniment has allowed us to identify two distinct layers: an archaic layer that is characteristic of the Buy-Tanyp subgroup of the Eastern Udmurts, and a more recent layer that is associated with the Tatyshly subgroup.
