Summary/Abstract: The article seeks to address the question of the function of documentary photography in relation to photographic series created on the sites of former German concentration camps. The aim is to present photography as a medium of memory that, on the one hand, serves as a historical document, and on the other – as a carrier of cultural memory. Through a semiotic analysis, the author attempts to interpret the meanings embedded in photographs from the discussed series, suggesting that an image should be perceived not only as an image of record but also as an image of memory. Visual experience appears to be a key element for the full reception of the analyzed photographic work.
