Summary/Abstract: Aniela Pająkówna (Pająk), b. 1862 in Korniów (Korniv), Pokuttia, d. 1912 in Paris, was a Polish artist of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, who for years remained in the shadow of Olga Boznańska and Anna Bilińska-Bohdanowicz. Previous monographs, based mainly on her sister’s memories and on her relations with Stanisław Przybyszewski, included a lot of factual errors, like the wrong year of birth (1864) and the wrong place of birth. Using new, neverbefore- published archive material and correspondence, the author corrects the wrong information, emphasizing the role of Helena and Mieczysław Pawlikowski of Medyka as the artist’s mentors and patrons. This paper presents her road from studying in Galician schools to a teachers’ college and Adrian Baraniecki’s courses, to the painting studies in Paris as well as her later artistic and social activity in Lviv. This research sheds new light on how her creative identity was formed and aims to restore her due place in the history of Polish art.
