The Process of Colectivization in Ciceu (Harghita): 1949-1962

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to put to light the process of collectivization in Ciceu (Harghita) according to the participants' interviews. 16 interviews were carried out, all intervievees being Hungarian Catholics. The majority of them were only up to 7th form in school, more of them are farmers but almost all of them worked in state institutions. Most sufferred because of the events during collectivization but one could find among them presidents of collectivity, secretaries, brigade members and one was warrant officer in Miliţia. Up to 1952 Ciceu was an independent administrative commune and then together with Siculeni-Ciuc became part of Harghita. After the administrative reform in 1968, Siculeni, Ciceu, Racu, Satu Nou became parts of Siculeni commune. From the structure point of view this study has the following chapters: Introduction dealing with the internal context of communist setting-up; effects of communist legislation in agriculture (1949- 1957); imposed collectivization-collective comrades; Agricultural Production Co-operatives; the image of agitator; rezistence against collectivization and atrocities; consequences of collectivization for community. The process of collectivization in Ciceu, although started late enough, was interpreted in the general phenomenon of agricultural channges in Romania. Rough interventions of authorities and the specific methods of "explaining" were also met in Ciceu, even if not so important as in other region. Still, the consequences were unhappy enough, having a negative intluence for economy, social life and demography in Ciceu.
