Summary/Abstract: This article presents an analysis of the way in which nonverbal communication is expressed in Dimitrie Cantemir's novel, Istoria hieroglifica, applying methods and techniques relevant to our approach. The methodology on which this research is based is varied. We use in the analysis different research methods and concepts taken from linguistics, pragmatics and anthropology. In this sense, the analysis of nonverbal messages brings together both these perspectives and others, such as the symbolic, ideological and cultural. In this research, we relate to the characters as potential participants in the discourse, whom we treat according to the pragmatic principles of cooperation and conversational politeness.
