Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes Norman Manea’s literary identity and critical reception in Romanian culture, highlighting the tension between personal memory and collective history. It traces the evolution of his reception across two phases: the communist period, marked by censorship and allusive writing, and the American exile period, characterized by confessional discourse and thematic universalization. Manea is seen as a writer of memory, with a fragmented identity expressed through essays, introspective prose, and ethical reflection. Although marginalized in the Romanian literary canon, he is internationally recognized. Post-communist criticism reevaluates his work, emphasizing stylistic complexity, moral engagement, and his ability to articulate themes such as exile, Jewish identity, and historical trauma.
