Summary/Abstract: The article attempts to analyze the state of development in modern Ukrainian historiography of issues related to the self-government of Ukrainian cities of the late Middle Ages based on the principles of Magdeburg law, to clarify the main achievements in the study of this problem and issues that have not been sufficiently covered. It has been established that the relevance of the study of the introduction of Magdeburg law on the territory of Ukraine is determined by a number of scientific factors and socio-political trends in view of the debatable issue of the spread and role of Magdeburg law on Ukrainian lands and the need to use the historical experience of effective city self-government, which would fully correspond to world and European standards in the conditions of Ukraine's entry into the European and world space. The process of development of modern city self-government, strengthening of the responsibility of urban communities for solving the problems of social, economic and cultural development of cities determines the special importance of using the experience of the spread, establishment and functioning of European city legislation on Ukrainian territory, and in particular under Magdeburg law. It was determined that research on the history of self-government of Ukrainian cities in the late Middle Ages based on the principles of Magdeburg law intensified after the declaration of Ukraine's independence. Over the past decades, a number of scientific works have been published, which contain actual systematized material on the introduction, spread, formation and functioning of Magdeburg law on Ukrainian territory. It has been found that researchers associate the spread of urban selfgovernment with the historical development of humanity in general. The classic form of its organization was Magdeburg law, as a feudal city law, which developed in the German city of Magdeburg, later spread to many other European cities, Eastern in particular, and became a symbol of city self-government in the late Middle Ages and early modern times. Magdeburg law in scientific publications is defined as medieval city law, which contributed to the introduction of certain features of the Western European urban system into Ukrainian cities, the creation of representative bodies of urban public administration by urban strata, becoming an important factor in the legal and cultural process of rapprochement between Ukraine and Western Europe. It is emphasized that despite the fact that Magdeburg law in Ukrainian cities did not play the same role as in the cities of Western and Central Eastern Europe, researchers believe that it was an important tool for ensuring democratic self-government, stimulated the development of legal culture, and became a significant guarantor of the implementation of economic and social opportunities, creating essential prerequisites for the birth and development of democratic institutions of civil society on Ukrainian lands.
