The Global South as a Career, the Polish People’s Republic as a Method: Postcolonial Tendencies in Polish Film Studies

Summary/Abstract: This article reflects on the period of the Polish People’s Republic in the context of the centre-periphery relationship, suggesting that the country can be considered an active participant in international cultural processes. From this perspective, the Polish People’s Republic becomes a space of exchange and solidarity with the film cultures of Asia, Africa, and Latin America, allowing for the incorporation of local experience into research on the Global South and a reinterpretation of the histories of world cinema. The proposed methodology combines the postulates of New Film History with postcolonial and post-socialist theories. Archival research plays a special role, revealing how Polish opinion leaders negotiated and disseminated images of the Global South. The author engages with existing attempts to problematise these images within Polish film studies. The article thus proposes opening new avenues of research and incorporating vernacular perspectives into international debates on Cold War alliances with the Global South.
