Summary/Abstract: This paper offers an overview of Halliday’s three metafunctions—ideational, interpersonal, and textual—as they operate across multimodal discourse. Drawing on the framework of systemic functional linguistics (SFL), it explores how meaning is jointly constructed through diverse semiotic resources, including language, images, film, and architecture. The analysis highlights how ideational meaning is conveyed in print advertisements (O'Halloran 2008), how interpersonal meaning emerges in film scenes (O'Halloran 2004), and how textual meaning can be identified in three-dimensional forms such as buildings (O’Toole 2004). By illustrating how meaning is mapped across different modes, the paper emphasizes the value of SFL in understanding multimodal semiosis.
