Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the history of the so-called self-defence units in occupied Transnistria. After the beginning of the German-Romanian occupation, these units, especially those that operated in the northeastern regions, near the Bug River, under the command of commanders - SS officers from the Special Command Russia, took an active part in the execution of civilians, mainly persons of Jewish nationality. Based on an analysis of investigative cases and trial materials from the USSR and West Germany after the mid-1950s, the author analyses the main criminal complexes and places his conclusions in a more general context. The article presents some of the results of the research project «Der ‘volksdeutsche Selbstschutz’ in Transnistrien: Verbrechen, Nachkriegsjustiz und Erinnerung».
