STREET RENAMING AS A TOOL OF MEMORY POLITICS: CONTEMPORARY RESEARCH METHODS

Summary/Abstract: Renaming streets in Ukraine necessitates a thorough and professional evaluation, particularly given their significance as an instrument of memory politics. Foremost, analyzing the dynamics of changes in street nomenclature, the regional specifics of renaming, and how the new names mirror societal values, ideals, and beliefs is essential. This analysis will aid in making well-founded and balanced decisions during future street renaming while also considering previous errors in toponymic policy and strategies to address them. Furthermore, relevant scholarly research should employ modern methodologies that leverage the advancements of digital humanities. This article characterizes academic studies focused on street renaming in European cities, where researchers have utilized contemporary methodological approaches. The novelty of this work is in the author’s attempt to introduce interdisciplinary research that aims to improve the methodology of studying street renaming while highlighting the significance of digital history as a growing field within historical scholarship. A comparative analysis of foreign and Ukrainian scholarly works and projects that adopt a critical toponymic perspective and operate contemporary digital tools has facilitated the proposal of a methodological approach for historians investigating the processes of renaming urbanonyms. In particular, the author underscores the importance of using digital tools for quantitatively analyzing large datasets, their typologizing and clustering, and geographic information systems to construct a spatial understanding of urban street nomenclature and uncover the concealed historical layers of urban space.
