Promotional and educational activities of the National Archives of Catalonia – an overview of selected initiatives

Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to discuss selected aspects of the promotional and educational activities of the National Archives of Catalonia, the most important archival institution established to preserve the archival materials produced by the regional government. As an introduction to the topic, a brief outline of the history of Catalan archives is provided, focusing on the period of the Second Republic, when the Archives were first seen as an important part of preserving the documentary heritage. Subsequently, the National Archives of Catalonia themselves are presented – their history, organisation and the legal basis governing their activities, including popularisation. The main part of the text discusses the educational initiatives undertaken by the Archives. Particular attention was given to the “Online History Laboratory” project, aimed at primary and secondary school students. The article applies the case study method, enhanced by an analysis of contemporary and historical legislation as well as literature on the subject.
